
Emily Hicks
Flautist
Emily graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2023, with distinction in her Master of Music degree in Instrumental Performance.
Emily is a keen orchestral player. She has recently been invited to play with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra. Some orchestral highlights at the conservatoire include, playing principal flute Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe Suite No.2, conducted by Barry Wordsworth. Playing principal flute in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Dreams, conducted by Paul Murphy, accompanying dancers of the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Playing principal flute in Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra in Birmingham Symphony Hall, conducted by Michael Seal, and playing the Rite of Spring with the CBSO Youth Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Gourlay, performed on Birmingham Symphony Hall stage.
Emily is the winner of the 2021 Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Woodwind Prize. In 2021, Emily was also successful in the British Flute Society competition, winning a special award for the best low flute performance, playing 'Walpurgis' for solo alto flute. Most recently Emily won 3rd prize in the international music competition 'Nouvelles Etoiles'.
Emily enjoys playing in chamber ensembles too. Including a flute and harp duo called The Athena Duo. The newest venture in her chamber music is a flute and guitar duo, The Luna Duo, the duo are passionate about exploring the diverse repertoire for the two instruments and enjoy a unique atmosphere the ensemble creates. Emily is also passionate about playing traditional folk music in Juniper Folk Band. Juniper are becoming increasingly successful, taking their music across the country, playing at weddings, parties, and folk festivals. Emily is proactive in the field of music education and outreach, gaining a great deal of experience throughout her time at the Conservatoire. Emily currently teaches flute at Winterfold House School, she teaches privately and also enjoys teaching for In Harmony in Telford. Emily is also involved with the Welsh National Opera, 'Opera Tutti' programme, an immersive multi-sensory concert designed for children and young people aged 5-19 years old with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD).
